OpenSocket: OpenSocial trojan horse into Facebook
It was only a matter of time. The project was spearheaded by Dan Lester to allow “you to run OpenSocial gadgets within Facebook“. Well done!

Here’s a simple Friends Dump example using OpenSocket.

OpenSocial Early Statistics

Compete has some early statistics for us. This is a breakdown of how many member of each social network are also members of another social member. For instance, 64% of all Facebook users are also MySpace users.
As you can see, as of now there is very little crossover once you get outside of the “Big Three” (Facebook, MySpace, Bebo). It will be interesting to see how having an Open API will change these statistics in the months to come — especially when it comes to bringing together personal and professional networks.
OpenSocial Sample Code Available
Google has finally published some sample Container Code for OpenSocial, it’s about time. It’s great to release a development platform but before it can become useful you have to give developers a little peek under the hood.
Their sample will give you a look at what a basic implementation of an OpenSocial container looks like, and it provides a quick guide to setting up your OpenSocial testing environment.

OpenSocial Video Demo
The guys from the Bleacher Report explain what its like to develop an application for OpenSocial. They ported their web application, originally designed as a Forum for sports fans, into OpenSocial.
You can see a demo of how Orkut was meshed into their application using the API. One of the things that they bring up is that they would like access to a larger amounts of data. This raises an interesting question, how “open” will the companies participating in this standard be willing to become?
Facebook’s Money Maker
Written by guest writer Foley
3 words. Pandemic. Mullet. Beacon.
You’ll probably never see those 3 words in the same sentence, paragraph, or even book. Well, it is in one book - Facebook. Rumor has it those three words are codewords for Facebook’s newest money making scheme.
Facebook has a fairly diverse range of revenue stream, ranging from flyers, virtual gifts, polls, sponsored groups, negotiating an inflated valuation for investment money, etc… To add to the growing list is screwing Facebook application developers and stripping users of more privacy. How so? Here’s what the rumored code projects are.
Pandemic: Removing sponsored groups pages on Facebook.
Mullet: Replacing the sponsored groups page with more a more interactive page consisting of games and applications.
Beacon: Following a Facebook user’s footprint across the web in order to collect more information and serve more relevant ads.
